Conservative MEPs today called on the European Union to take an axe to “frivolous and unfocused” spending programmes after the bloc’s auditors levelled searing criticism at a costly scheme supposed to make forests better.
Budgetary-control spokesman Philip Bradbourn said: “This report lays bare the abandon with which the EU Commission hurl huge sums of taxpayers’ money at pet projects without ever properly considering what benefit will come in return.”
He spoke out after the Court of Auditors published a special report into a seven-year programme of EU support for private forests, which was supposed to improve their economic performance. It found that despite expenditure amounting to a massive €535 million (£451 million), the scheme produced no tangible results.
Auditors identified a series of shortcomings including poor monitoring of how the money was spent and failure to define the economic value of a forest in the first place.
The report was drawn up after an investigation of what happened to millions of Euros handed to the owners of private forests in Spain, Italy, Hungary, Austria and Slovenia.
Mr Bradbourn, Conservative MEP for the West Midlands said, “Quite why the Commission thought so much extra money was needed by landowners in the first place, I have no idea. What is clear is that this scheme was waved through without an ounce of real thought for how the money might be spent or just what it should achieve.
“This kind of frivolous and unfocused spending has to stop. Sadly, when it comes to sensible use of public money, the Commission too often cannot see the wood for the trees.”

Christopher Pincher MP attended Tamworth Battle of Britain Service at St Editha’s Church on Sunday, 15th September, to mark the 73rd Anniversary of the biggest air battle in our history.
Tamworth MP, Christopher Pincher, said, “We should be very proud of the service all our Armed Forces personnel give to our country. But each September we rightly remember the bravery and the sacrifice of a few young men who stood in the way of the imminent invasion of our country. The Battle of Britain was won by the RAF. Even though so many years have gone by we still honour them and their victory.”

Christopher Pincher said, “As one in three people over 65 will develop dementia, it is important that we raise awareness and help make Tamworth a dementia friendly community. Many people don’t know enough about Dementia and it is vital that we support organisations such as Alzheimer’s Society to improve diagnosis, and to ensure that those affected receive the reassurance and support they need.”

Tamworth’s MP, Christopher Pincher, has welcomed the news that Solihull based car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has announced 1700 new jobs as part of their £1.5bn expansion plan.
This latest round of job creation brings the total number of new jobs to 11,000 in the past three years. Before the last general election there was a real threat that JLR might close operations in the Midlands. But the firm, like the economy, is now growing.
Mr Pincher, said, “This is great news for our regional economy and adds to the picture that the economy is looking up, not just in services but also in the high end engineering markets with 11,000 new jobs being created alone at JLR. I hope Tamworth residents are able to take advantage of these new jobs and that more local employees will join me at my jobs fair to get more local people into jobs continuing the downward trend of local unemployment, now at its lowest since 2008.”
In other good news, Tamworth’s jobless figures fell last month by 29. The number of people out of work stands at 2.8% of the local workforce. Mr Pincher hopes his next Jobs Fair on 12th October will play a part in driving down unemployment still further.

This week (Tuesday) Tamworth Conservative Councillors proposed a motion that awarded Tamworth’s Service Associations Freedom of the Borough of Tamworth.
On behalf of the Conservative group their Deputy Leader, Cllr Robert Pritchard, moved a motion that stated – “In pursuance of the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the council permit The Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association, Mercian Regimental Association and Royal Air Force Association in Tamworth to hold Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Tamworth.”
The motion is in recognition of all the hard work service associations do for their members. Not only do service associations support their members when they are in difficult circumstances, they also provide activities and social events that keep ex-service men and women in touch with each other.
The vote means that all local branches of the Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association, Mercian Regimental Association and Royal Air Force Association have freedom of Tamworth.
The motion which attracted cross party support will also allow the service organisations to march through Tamworth with their banners and standards flying.
This meeting followed a vote that awarded Staffordshire Regimental Mascot Cpl Watchman V freedom of Tamworth. The award of Freedom to our regimental mascot has attracted attention of other Staffordshire councils, with Burntwood already following Tamworth’s example. Several others have expressed a desire to do the same and public campaigns have been launched in Stafford and Burton to get councils there to bestow the same honour as Tamworth.
Cllr Robert Pritchard said, “Tamworth is so proud of its service organisations and our armed forces. They are a very important part of many ex-servicemen’s lives and do so much to support their colleagues. We have very strong links to our armed forces and we are often setting an example other towns can follow; again we are showing the way forward in Staffordshire.
“We hope to have a day when all organisations with Freedom of the Borough parade through the town centre together. This will allow the public to celebrate our important military links and say thank you.”
