Tamworth MP Lobbies Government to try and get Olympic Torch to Town
Christopher Pincher, local Member of Parliament for Tamworth, has written to the Minister responsible for the Olympics urging him to consider Tamworth in the Second Stage of the Olympic Torch Relay. Currently the ‘Overnight Stops’ of the Olympic Relay have been confirmed but the details are still being discussed. The closest overnight stops to Tamworth are Derby on Friday 29th June and Birmingham on Saturday 30th June. Mr Pincher has urged the Government to consider routing the torch through Tamworth on the journey between these two cities. He said:
“Tamworth is a fantastic town in the middle of Great Britain with a rich history and an active Athletics Club and deserves the honour of having the Olympic Torch visit us. I personally think the sight of a torchbearer passing through the castle grounds would be an iconic image of our town and would showcase Tamworth’s ancient history to an international audience.”
Mr. Pincher added:
“The Government is also on the look-out for ‘Torchbearers’ to carry the Flame across the country and I encourage residents to nominate individuals. I think it would be a tremendous coup if a Tamworth resident won this honour.”
The London 2012 committee are looking for 8,000 Torchbearers and are looking for local people who have gone beyond their ‘ personal best ‘ in their local committees. To nominate somebody please go to www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay and let Christopher know on Christopher.pincher.mp@parliament.uk.
